1
Make sure the washing machine is unplugged before you begin any trouble shooting or repairs. Water and electricity are a deadly combination.
-
2
Decide if you should attempt the repair yourself. When it comes to Kenmore motors and warranty issues, it is best to seek the expertise of a professional. Many stores have a repairman on retainer.
-
-
3
Check the carbon brushes to see if sparks occur. If so, you can do this repair yourself as long as you read the instructions in the owner's manual first. This can save money and prevent a service call.
-
4
Take the motor out of the washing machine body and take it to a professional repairman. This will save you the cost of a service call. The motor is mounted on an adjustable bracket.
-
5
Search the motor for the overload protector clip. Check to see if this clip is working properly. If the clip fails, the motor will not work.
-
6
Clip the disconnected wire from the overload protector to a probe on the VOM set. Do this for the lead wire as well. The meter should read zero. If the needle jumps the overload protector is faulty. Purchase a new protector, replace the old one and reinstall the motor.
-
7
Stop right here with the self-repair. If the Kenmore washer motor still doesn't work, call a repairman who specializes in Kenmore appliances.
