  4. Step 4

Cut the fabric you are using for the backing into a square that is 44 by 44 inches.

  7. Step 7

Lay the squares out on a large surface in rows. The first row will have 6 squares then there will be 6 rows with 8 squares in each row. Alternate patches so none touching will touch is the same.

  8. Step 8

    Iron the seams flat.

  9. Create the Quilting Layers

  10. Step 1

Sew all the patches in each row together. Leave a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Line up the seams of each rows and sew the rows together. The top row will have two squares missing from each corner.

  12. Step 3

  13. Step 4

Pin the edges together. Take a measuring tape, or yard stick, and place the beginning of the measuring tape at the edge of the folded corner.

Place a washable marker at 22 inches on the measuring tape and use the tape to mark a circle on the fabric.

  15. Step 6

  22. Step 4

Stitch both the ruffle and the two ties to the patchwork piece. Pin them to the patchwork piece to keep them out of the way.

  23. Step 5

Pin the patchwork and backing piece together with the right sides facing each other. Lay the batting on top of the backing piece and pin it in place as well.

  24. Step 6

Stitch through all three layers but leave a 6 to 8 inch space on the straight edge open.

  25. Step 7

Turn the tree skirt right sides out using the hole that you left in the straight edge and stitch the hole closed.

  26. Step 8

Cut and unpin the ruffle and the two ties from the patchwork section of the tree skirt.

  27. Step 9
