How to Change the Chart Type in Excel

Once you have created a chart in Microsoft Excel 2007, you may change your mind about the type of chart you have chosen. Instead of recreating your chart, you can simply change the chart type of the existing chart. The steps below will show you how you can change the chart type of your Excel chart in a just a few minutes time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft Excel 2007

Step1
Start Microsoft Excel 2007 and open a workbook from your documents that contains a chart or you can create a chart from data in an existing workbook.
Step2
Right-click on top of the chart that you want to change to a different type of chart and click "Change Chart Type." The "Change Chart Type" dialog box will open in the middle of the screen.
Step3
Click the type of chart you would like to change to on the left side of the "Change Chart Type" dialog box.
Step4
Select the specific chart you would like to change your existing chart to by clicking it in the right portion of the "Change Chart Type" dialog box. The chart you have chosen will be highlighted in orange.
Step5
Click the "OK" button to close the "Change Chart Type" dialog box and change the selected chart to the new chart type you have indicated.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of choosing a category of chart you want to view in the "Change Chart Type" dialog box, you can scroll down on the right hand side of the dialog box to display all of the categories and charts that fall into those categories.
