How to Design a Gothic Lolita Outfit

The Gothic Lolita phenomena began in Japan, but has gradually spread around the world, throughout Asia, Europe and North America. The style is designed to make the so-called Lolita girl look like a doll. Putting together the best outfit is a large part of the appeal of the Gothic Lolita style. Many customize their outfits themselves.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start by throwing out the notion that the Gothic Lolita style has any sexual overtones or is related in any way to "Goth" style. The name instead is intended to convey a time period of the Victorian era and the Lolita girls just want to be as cute and elegant as possible.

  2. Step 2

Invest in the best petticoats and bloomers as these are the retro style accessories that really set the Gothic Lolita apart from other cosplayers. These will probably have to be ordered online. Also, invest in a good quality petticoat storage container, such as a plastic dress box.

  3. Step 3

Buy knee length skirts. Be sure the skirts are full enough to wear with a petticoat. Get a set of matching tops to go with the skirts. These should be color coordinated, so offset a white blouse with pink accents with a pink skirt with white accents.

  4. Step 4

Go to the shoe store and look for the classic, old-style shoes. These should also match the blouse and skirt. Boots are OK, as long as they are flats--no high heels.

  5. Step 5

Cover you head with a lacy hat with ribbons or a simple large bow. The hats are one of the most fun parts of being a Gothic Lolita. These can be custom made for around $10, or purchased for a little more.

  6. Step 6

Finish the ensemble with accessories like a parasol or little purse. Get a parasol that is functional as well as charming.

on 8/25/2009 The first step was nice. I have to say I don't think that getting a box for your petticoat is at all important. If you hang them properly, they will stay poofier than if you put them in a box.

This article could be more specific, but it wasn't bad at all.
