Step 1
Choose black eyeliner and black shadow. Try not to choose a dry, cheap pencil or it will either be too difficult to smudge (Leto style) or too dry to apply. Any shadow will do, but the cheaper the better.
-
Step 2
Outline your eyes with a thick line. There is no need to be precise since a messy look is what you're trying to achieve. If you can't get the line thick enough because you are using pencil with a thin tip, you can go over your line as much as you need. Think "raccoon eyes."
-
Step 3
Smudge it. You can use a special smudging tool or your finger. If using your finger, take your pinky and smear along the line. Use your pinky to avoid using too much pressure on this sensitive area.
-
Step 4
Go over the line with black eye shadow. You could skip this step, but Jared Leto adds shadow for staying power while onstage with his band or a long night out.

Step 5
Let it smear as the day goes on. There's no need to reapply like a woman or obsess about wear. If it melts away or the line becomes dull, don't worry. Jared Leto is often seen with smudged, worn liner.
