For a young child, there are few things so traumatic as the divorce that the parents go through. Often, the children and their feelings are all too lightly acknowledged.
It is absolutely imperative that children- from infancy up to those college years- know that they are not to blame for that marriage break up.
Reminders
Step1
Mom or Dad, you'll be in a great deal of pain, and understandably so. The children, however, must be shown your undivided attention at similar times and working on the same activities; if this only for an hour each day following dinner, so be it.
Step2
Hugs must be given as they leave you and when they walk back in.
Step3
"I love you" must always be said by parents to the children. Many children have come to feel that if their parents could fall out of love, maybe parents could stop loving them as well.
Step4
Below is a poem that I once wrote for my own daughter. Sometimes things like this will help our children to smile when times are tough.
Tips & Warnings
Your eyes, like stars, light up the night.
Your golden hair lights the day.
You are a dove in its flight-
Flowers in the month of May.
Those lips of pink form a sweet smile.
A tiny button for a nose.
Stop and savor it awhile.
We should all know of those-
Those moments, looks, special things we must cherish.
