Step 1
Go for loose waves instead of tight curls. Lots of hair equals lots of volume and you will want to avoid a "fro" at all costs, unless, of course, that is your goal. Loose waves and curls are always in and can jazz up straight hair with only a little product and effort.

Step 2
Use some different levels when you go up with your thick hair. A single ponytail will almost guarantee a large "poof" effect. Separate your hair into smaller sections, pull back, and then create your finished look. You can make more of an even cascade down your back that will be more glamorous and less poofy.

Step 3
Get creative with twists and braids. Your thick hair will actually come in as an advantage with updos that use braids and twists. You will have plenty of hair to make beautiful thick braids and twists and probably have hair to leave flowing underneath the braided designs.

Step 4
Bring back the bun with a twist. Take large sections of your hair after you put it up in a ponytail and curl with large rollers. Pin the curled, rolled hair up into an awesome retro bun. The large curls spaced out from the ponytail holder will give you a stylish updo that isn't too old or dowdy.
