You are making a craft for your mother and grandmother and would like a curly fabric ribbon. You are making bows for your daughter and would like a ribbon curling down her long hair. The challenge is not only curling the ribbon but keeping the curl permanently. Believe it or not, you can easily treat fabric ribbons so they stayed curled.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Bowl of water
  • Dowel rods of different widths, cut in half
  • Straight pins
  • Cookie sheet
  • Baking racks
  • Oven
  • Hot pads
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Determine the length you want the finished ribbon to be. Add 50% more to allow for the curls. For instance, if you want 10 inches of curly ribbon, cut 15 inches before curling. You can always trim excess ribbon if it is too long. Cut the ribbon.

  3. Step 3

Put the cut ribbon into the bowl of water. Make sure the ribbon is saturated. Squeeze out excess water.

  4. Step 4

Select a dowel rod that has the width you want the finished curl to be. A thicker rod will give a looser curl and a smaller rod a tighter one.

  5. Step 5

Lay the ribbon on the dowel rod at a slight angle. Pin the end nearest the top of the dowel rod. Wrap the ribbon around the rod by twirling the rod. Keep the edges of the ribbon close together and avoid overlapping. Pin the other end of the ribbon to the rod.

  6. Step 6

Place the baking rack on the cookie sheet. Put the dowel rod with the ribbon curled around it on the baking rack.

  7. Step 7

Place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake until the ribbon is dried. Check it every 10 minutes. Do not check for dryness by uncurling the ribbon; instead check by carefully running your fingers down the length of the ribbon. The drying time will vary depending upon the thickness of the ribbon.

  8. Step 8

Remove the cookie sheet from the oven when the ribbon is dry. Allow it to cool completely on the dowel rod. Remove the pins and carefully uncurl the ribbon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Adjust the length of ribbon you cut by the width of the dowel rod. Tighter curls will shorten the length of the ribbon more than looser curls.
  • This only works with fabric ribbon.
  • Supervise children when making permanently curled fabric ribbon.
