    Instructions

Make it appear that you are doing something very important. Keep papers and folders on your desk so that you appear swamped with projects. Lay a few pens and pencils about as well.

Keep different windows open on your computer. One of them should be a word processing document that actually has something in it, a spreadsheet with some graphs or an Internet browser with some research you need to be doing. If a co-worker or your boss is coming, you can switch to that window quickly. Make sure your computer monitor doesn't face any windows or doors.

Get up to get coffee or water often. Nobody can argue with your biological need to drink fluids. Even if you don't like coffee, once it gets cold you have an excuse to get up again. Just don't leave your game of solitaire showing on your computer while you are away from your desk.

Go to the bathroom often. Walk slowly to the bathroom, take your time and then wash your hands thoroughly. You don't want to get sick, after all. Walk slowly back to your desk. Stop by the water cooler for another drink. It'll be time for another bathroom break in no time.

Try to appear stressed out. If someone asks if you are all right, point out that you are busy and then hurry off. When walking about, have a clipboard or a folder in your hands and pretend to be reading it so that nobody will bother you.
