Turn the jeans wrong side out. Put them on in front of a full-length mirror. Make the first mark with the marking chalk about 2 inches above your knees. Continue to mark down one leg to the bottom hem to indicate where you need to take the jeans in. Repeat for the other leg.

Take the jeans off. Lay them flat on a table. Use a straight edge to straighten the line you marked in Step 2. Blend the taper at the knee as much as possible.

Thread the needle with contrasting thread. Take long basting stitches down the length of the marking on the jeans.

Try the jeans on right side out. Sit, stand and move around in them. Make any adjustments necessary. Remember to allow enough room in the skinny legs to get your feet through them.

Sew the seam on the wrong side with the sewing machine. Stitch the seam a second time to reinforce the legs. If there is a lot of excess fabric from flare-cut jeans, trim it off.
