How to Make Easy Pants
You can pay a lot of money for a pair of comfortable pants in a casual wear clothing store or you can make your own. These are simple to make if you create your pattern from a pair of pants.
Things You'll Need
- Paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Fabric
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- 1-inch wide elastic
- Safety pin
Instructions
-
Prepare the Pattern
-
1
Choose a material, preferably something soft. Prewash your fabric and dry it. If the fabric is a color that is not likely to fade, you can wash it with a regular load of laundry.
-
2
Trace a pattern from a pair of pants that fit you well, or buy a pattern at the fabric store. Find a pattern that doesn't have a side seam.
-
-
3
Lay the fabric on a flat surface. Place the pattern on top. Pin the pattern in place. Cut out the pants.
Sew the Pants
-
4
Sew the patch pockets on the back of the pants. If the pattern you are going to make calls for side-seam pockets, do them along with the side seams.
-
5
Put the front crotch pieces right sides together. Pin in place. Stitch with the sewing machine. Do the same with the back crotch pieces.
-
6
Pin the inseam right side together. Sew this seam.
-
7
Fold the waistband over to the inside of the pants. Stitch it into place. Leave an opening about 2-inches long.
-
8
Measure the elastic around your waist. Allow 2 extra inches or more for comfort. Pin the safety pin into one end of the elastic and run it through the waistband. Overlap the ends of the elastic 1 inch on each end and sew them together. Finish stitching the rest of the waistband.
-
9
Measure the hem on the pants. Pin it, and then stitch it into place.
-
10
Turn the pants right-side out and put them on to check the fit.
