How to Block a Laptop From a Network

Network security is one of the most important and difficult tasks that are faced by IT personnel today. Keeping unauthorized users from accessing the private network will help protect sensitive information from unauthorized people. The vast number of wireless networks in use makes this task probably the most important first tier defense. The best solution is to define the MAC addresses allowed to access the network.

  • Locate the DHCP server for your network. This server may be one computer or in the simplest networks, the router may serve this purpose for your network. This is the most common method in peer-to-peer type networks.

  • Find the security section of the router set up or of the DHCP configuration settings. This section of the control software defines number of users connected at one time, the range of IP addresses, and any other restrictions required for this part of the network.

  • Locate the MAC filter section of the network security settings. In this area, it is possible to define either the MAC of a computer that the network will grant or deny access. This is the best way to prevent an unknown computer from gaining access to the network. Each computer has a unique MAC address associated with the network device.

  • Enter the MAC addresses of all the computers in your network. By specifying each computer in the network and setting the list to be the only MAC addresses permitted to access the network, by default the network denies all other MAC addresses access.
