How to Get Rid of an Old Car

Dealing with an old car can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you're low on funds and don't know the first thing about how to sell something. Thankfully, there are several ways you can get rid of that old car, and they won't cost a dime. So go ahead and clean out the back seat; that old clunker can be gone before you know it.

  • Give it to a friend or family member. If you know someone who needs a vehicle, give your car a new life by donating it to a friend. She'll be grateful for the wheels, and you don't have to deal with the expense of trying to sell it for pennies on the dollar. Make sure she knows the condition of the car, so that she doesn't come back later upset if it breaks down on the side of the road.

  • Donate it. Many charities take cars as donations. Not only does this help get the car out of the garage, but you can even deduct the donation from your tax return in most cases. Make sure to get a receipt, and if the car is valued at more than $5,000, get it appraised before donating.

  • Sell it. If you want to try to make some extra money when you get rid of an old car, there are routes that you can take that don't require any money up front. Craigslist is great for this sort of thing; you simply post a picture and a description of your car and wait for the phone to ring.

  • Trade it in. Unless you're rolling in money, you probably need some sort of vehicle to get around in. So use your old car to help fund a new one. Some car dealerships even have special "push, pull or tow it" sales in which they take trade-ins no matter what the condition.
