An Asher's Equalizer is a handle for one of the bottle slings that holds a bottle with a lip on the top of the neck. It was invented by Harry Asher in the 1980s and is considered to be an improvement over the more common handles of this type.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fasten the bottle securely with any of the bottle slings such as an Asher’s jug sling. This will result in the sling holding the bottle by the neck just below the lip.

  2. Step 2

Observe that there will be a loop of rope on one side of the bottle; call it loop A. The two ends of rope will be on the opposite side of the bottle from loop A.

  3. Step 3

Tie the two ends of rope together in a secure knot such as a fisherman’s knot. This will form another loop of rope; call it loop B. Make sure that loop B is considerably longer than loop A.

  4. Step 4

Form a loop of rope from the bottom portion of each end of rope forming loop B and call them loops C and D. Pull loops C and D through loop A.

  5. Step 5

Fold the top portion of loop B over the top of loop A and pull loops C and D through loop B. Dress the Asher’s Equalizer carefully so that loops C and D form a handle by which to carry the bottle. Loops A and B should close neatly around loops C and D.
