How to Treat Women in Russia

Don't put too much stock in the stereotype of a husky, dour Russian woman in peasant dress, watching over a household full of children. The modern Russian woman is generally well educated and very knowledgeable of Western culture, and she demands to be treated with equality and respect.

1. Treat women in Russia the same way as you would treat the men. Decades of Communist rule guaranteed women in Russia an equal voice in politics, business and family life, and to dismiss a Russian woman's opinion as inferior is to invite trouble. Remember, most women in Russia have received the same level of education as their male counterparts, and they expect to be included equally in the discussion.

2. Follow the lead of a Russian woman whenever it is to time to greet her or say goodbye. Russians are not known for their displays of affection, and you might offend a Russian woman with an impulsive, enthusiastic hug--or even a warm handshake. In most cases, a Russian woman will merely smile and nod when it is time to say hello or goodbye.

3. Be honest and direct whenever you speak to Russian women. Russians are usually realistic and grounded and do not appreciate sarcasm, innuendos or excessive flirting. A lot of importance is placed on speaking your mind and coming directly to the point, rather than beating around the bush, even when it comes to casual conversation.

4. Show women in Russia respect when you are a guest in their homes, and be careful not to invade their privacy. In Russia, guests are almost never given "the tour of the house," and all social activities are usually confined to a common area such as a living room. Always ask to be shown the bathroom when necessary, and never go off on your own to explore the rest of the house.

5. Bring a small gift to Russian women if you are a guest in their homes. Souvenirs from America or flowers are always welcomed, as is a nice bottle of wine or brandy. If you are bringing flowers to a Russian woman, it is customary to purchase a bouquet with an odd number of flowers, which is considered good luck.

• There is some merit to the cliche of Russian women looking to marry Western men in order to get out of the country. Men who suddenly find themselves aggressively pursued by Russian women should treat the situation with the appropriate amount of care and skepticism.
