Xylitol is a sugar that is derived from birch trees and corncobs. The molecular structure is different from other sugars, and is the key to its health benefits. Xylitol can help prevent cavities from forming in your teeth by inhibiting bacteria from adhering to the teeth. Spry is a product line of dental defense products made by the company Xlear, Inc. They have products such as dental defense gum, mints and mouthwash. The consumption of about 8 to 10 grams of xylitol each day is believed to have substantial oral health benefits.

How to Obtain Spry Dental Products

  1. Step 1

Purchase Spry dental products online. You can find substantial discounts at online stores. The best prices seem to be at The Vitamin Shoppe (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Find Spry dental defense products at some health stores. The Vitamin Shoppe, which has a website for ordering, also has actual stores where you can purchase the products directly. This will save you shipping costs but then you have to pay for the gas to drive to the store.

  3. Step 3

Ask your dentist. Some dentists have Spry dental defense products available for purchase. Most often you will find the Spry gum and/or the Spry oral rinse at the dentist. However, you will probably pay more to buy the product at the dentist.

  4. How to Use Spry Dental Products

  5. Step 1
    Spry Dental Gum

    Spry Dental Gum

Chew Spry sugar free gum. It comes in 4 flavors: fresh fruit, peppermint, cinnamon or spearmint. You can purchase it in blister packs or in a jar loose. The gum is great because you can carry it with you everywhere and chew it anytime.

  6. Step 2

Try the mints. The mint flavors are lemon, peppermint and raspberry.

  7. Step 3
Spry Dental Defense System Oral Rinse

Use the Spry oral rinse as an anti-plaque/anti-cavity rinse. This product has the best price, although the large size makes it somewhat inconvenient to carry around to use throughout the day, so it is best used morning and night while at home.

  8. Step 4

Brush with Spry toothpaste. It doesn't contain fluoride, which some believe can actually weaken teeth. If you want a toothpaste with fluoride, you could use both the Spry toothpaste and a fluoride toothpaste together to get the maximum benefits.

  9. Step 5
    Xylo Sweet by Xlear, Inc.

Consider other products with Xylitol sold by Xlear who makes the Spry dental products. One product is Xylo-Sweet, a sugar substitute that can be added to anything. You can even purchase individual packets to take with you to add to coffee, tea, or even on your strawberries.

  10. Step 6
    Nature's Hollow Raspberry Preserves

Find other Xylitol products on the market, including generic brands. One interesting product is Nature's Hollow Raspberry Preserves (see Resources below), sweetened with Xylitol.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check for online specials on the Spry products, and stock up. One month the Spry dental gum 100 pieces may be $5.48 and the next month it's $6.73, for example.
  • Search more than one site to find the best prices on the products.
  • Xylitol is also great for diabetics, because it metabolizes without insulin.
  • Some people have a side effect of diarrhea when using xylitol products. If this happens, lessen the amount of xylitol you are consuming each day to see if this helps. If not, you may need to consult a physician about possibly not using these products
  • The Spry gum loses its flavor quickly. I recommend eating 2 pieces at once to help keep the flavor longer.
