Final Cut Pro 5 is a video editing program created by the Apple Corporation. Final Cut Pro has the ability to edit many different types of video feed. The Log and Capture window in Final Cut Pro 5 allows users to name, describe, cut and save video footage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plug your video camera or VCR into the computer and turn it on. Set the camera to the VTR/VTVCR mode.

  2. Step 2

Open Final Cut Pro 5. The program automatically detects the device if the camera or VCR is already turned on when Final Cut opens.

  3. Step 3

Click on the "File" tab and scroll down to "Log and Capture." Click on "Log and Capture." This opens the Log and Capture window.

  4. Step 4

Check that the video is playing in the window. If you get an error, go up to "View" and click "Refresh AV Devices."

  5. Step 5

Click on the "Log" tab to enter the name and information for the clip. The "Reel Information" is where you save the clip. Click "Clip Settings" to choose whether to record video, audio or neither.

  6. Step 6

Use the 2 bars under the Preview Screen to move through the clip frame by frame or to jump from spot to spot. The bar on the left of the screen moves the clip frame by frame. The bar on the right fast-forwards and rewinds the clip. There are also play, stop, pause, rewind and fast-forward buttons in the middle, under the Preview Screen.

  7. Step 7

Cut the clip by using the In and Out points. At the bottom of the screen there are 2 boxes with time codes in them. The box on the left is the "In." The box on the right is "Out." Find a starting point for the clip and push the "I" key on the keyboard. The time stamp on the "In" box changes to the time of the spot you selected in the video. Click the "O" key on the keyboard to stop the video. The time code in the "Out" box in now set.

Click "Capture" to secure the edited clip. Final Cut Pro captures and saves everything between the In and Out points.
