Step 1
Hold your fist together with the thumb below your knuckles. The grasp should be loose enough to allow fluid movement, yet firm enough so that your fingers don't break while executing the jab.
-
Step 2
Punch forward without raising or lowering the hand. The punch should be similar to ringing a doorbell, with your hand moving forward at shoulder level. Unlike a boxer's jab, execute this punch with as little movement as possible to surprise your attacker.
-
Step 3
Perform the same jab as mentioned in Step 2, only squat down deeply with both legs as the punch shoots outward. This jab may come in handy in cramped or closed areas (like closets or when you're against a wall).
-
Step 4
Step forward as you punch your foe. The punch and step occur simultaneously with the foot hitting the ground just as your punch hits its target. This allows your body weight to add force to the punch.
-
Step 5
Move backward (with the opposite leg of your punching arm) as you open up your hips and punch forward. You execute this punch when your foe has charged you unexpectedly, and you wish to elude them.
-
Step 6
Side step your foe by moving at a 45-degree angle forward. Your step should be to the outside of the attacker with your inside arm rising, just as the attacker closes in. Aim for the stomach and allow your opponent's momentum to exert all of the force.
