How to Join the Knights of Columbus

If you're a community-minded Catholic male with a mind for charity, you might consider joining the Knights of Columbus. Formed in 1882 to offer financial aid to needy members, the Knights of Columbus has nearly two million members and 14,000 councils around the world.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet the basic requirements to join the Knights of Columbus. You must be at least 18-years old and a practicing male Catholic with a willingness to help the community.

    • 2

Find a local council. Visit the Knights of Columbus website and submit a form to request information about joining. This form includes your address. Your local council will receive your information and contact you about joining that council of the Knights of Columbus. You also can inquire at your parish or visit a nearby college campus (many colleges have councils).

    • 3

Become a Knight after passing through the first initiation degree, or exemplification ceremony. Members of the Knights of Columbus can choose to go on to Second, Third and Fourth degrees. Obtaining degrees means learning the core values of the Knights, which include Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

    • 4

Pay initiation fees and annual dues. Continue to be active in your church and community and pay dues each year to maintain your membership in the Knights of Columbus.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep exemplification ceremonies and other ceremonies of the Knights secret when you are a member. Details of ceremonial rites are not to be related to others outside the Knights of Columbus.
