How to Knit an iPod Case With a Carry Strap

This project may seem daunting, but it is fairly easy. If you know the basics of knitting, casting on and casting off, then you can do this project. It may add in a few new techniques, like button holes and picking up stitches, but these are as easy as casting on.

Instructions

    • 1

Swatch with the yarn and needles you want to use for the project.

    • 2

Determine the width of your iPod. You want the case to be snug on the iPod so the width measurement is enough for the case.

    • 3

Look at your swatch, and determine how many stitches per inch you are going to get. Multiply this by the width, in inches, of your iPod. This will give you the number of stitches you need to cast on.

    • 4

Measure the length all the way around the iPod, and add 2 inches extra for the top flap. This is the length that you are going to make the case. The case un-seamed is going to look like a plain rectangle or a tiny scarf.

    • 5

Make the button hole. When you get about half an inch away from the finished length of the project, you're going to need to cast off five stitches in the middle of a row. This will form the first half of the button hole. Make sure there are an equal number of stitches on each side of these five so that the button hole is centered.

    • 6

Knit to the stitches that you bound off. There is going to be a gap between the stitches on the needle. Cast on five stitches, and knit the rest of the stitches on the needle. This completes the button hole.

    • 7

Continue until the piece measure the correct length, and cast off all the stitches.

    • 8

Fold the project leaving the extra 2 inches with the button hole for the cover flap, and seam up the two sides

    • 9

Pick up three stitches on one side of the case. You want these stitches to be at the edge of the cast on edge. If you look closely at the cast on edge, you'll see that it forms V's at the top of the edge. Slide your needle under these V's, and knit like you would normally. This will seamlessly pick up the stitches.

    • 10

Knit the strap the length that you want it.

    • 11

Cast off the three stitches, and attach the end of the strap to the other side of the case.

    • 12

Fold the flap over and mark where the button hole sits on the finished project. Sew the button at this spot to secure the case and finish the project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play around with different stitch patterns and constructions of this case to make it your own. Use a lace pattern for a more girlie case, add stripes or attach both ends of a short strap to the same side of the case to make a wristlet for your iPod. There is no set pattern in knitting so play around until you make something that is uniquely you.
