Instructions

    • 1

Pick your yarn and needles. For this project, around 250 yards of worsted weight yarn will work best. Use the size of needles that are recommended on the ball band.

    • 2

Swatch with your yarn and needles. Swatching is extremely important because it not only gives you an idea of what your finished project will look like, it will give you an idea of how many stitches you will need for your pillow.

    • 3

Measure your swatch. You basically need to know how many stitches to cast on to fit the pillow correctly.

    • 4

Multiply the number of stitches per inch by the size of pillow form that you are going to use. For example, if you get 6 stitches per inch, and you're pillow form is 12 inches, you will need to cast on 72 stitches.

    • 5

Cast on the number of stitches you need, and begin knitting in stockinette stitch. You can certainly use garter or another stitch pattern like moss stitch, but make sure you use the pattern you choose in your swatch.

    • 6

Knit until the project measures long enough to cover both sides of your pillow form. For a 12-inch pillow form, you're pillow cover will need to be 24 inches long.

    • 7

Cast off all the stitches once your project is long enough.

    • 8

Fold the pillow cover in half, with the right side facing inwards and seam up two sides of the project. Weave in all the loose ends from casting on and off.

    • 9

Turn the project right side out, and put the pillow form into the cover.

    • 10

Seam up the last side of the pillow cover.

Tips & Warnings

  • You don't have to use a pillow form for this project. You can stuff your pillow with polyfill. If the polyfill shows through, stuff it in an old pair of pantyhose to keep it from showing through the stitches and seam up the pillow.
