How to Crochet a Snowman

A snowman is easy to crochet with a couple of basic stitches, making it a great project even for those just learning to crochet. It makes an adorable table or mantle decoration, and by simply attaching a yarn hanger, it becomes a great decoration for the Christmas tree.

Things You'll Need

• Crochet hook, medium size
• White yarn
• Green yarn or green felt
• Red yarn
• Brown yarn
• Polyester quilt batting
• Black cotton embroidery thread
• 6 or 8 black beads or tiny buttons
• White thread

Instructions

1. Begin by making a circle with four chain stitches with white yarn. Double crochet into each chain stitch, working your way around the circle.

2. Continue crocheting into the previous stitches as you work your way around the circle. Add a chain stitch with each row to increase the size of the circle, creating the head. When the head has reached the desired size, gradually decrease the stitches as you continue crocheting around, forming the snowman's neck.

3. Create the snowman's body by continuing to double crochet around, once again adding slip stitches to increasing the number of stitches, until the body has reached the desired size.

4. Stuff the snowman with a small amount of polyester quilt batting. The snowman should be soft, so don't overstuff it.

5. Crochet a scarf from green or red yarn, and a tiny broomstick from brown yarn, using simple double crochets. Stitch them to the snowman with white thread. Create a hat by crocheting green yarn, or if you prefer, make it out of felt.

6. Embroider the snowman's mouth and nose from black cotton embroidery thread. Sew three or four beads or tiny buttons under the nose to create a mouth, and sew three or four more beads down the snowman's tummy for buttons.

7. Thread some white yarn through the hat to make a hanger for the snowman.

Tips & Warnings

• Embroider the snowman's mouth and buttons if a small child will be playing with the snowman. Don't use small beads or buttons that can pose a danger of swallowing.
