Driving on the freeways for the very first time can cause stress and apprehension for the novice driver. Cars speed by at what appears to be light speed. However, driving on the freeways for the first time does not have to be a difficult and scary experience with the proper preparation and knowledge.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a low traffic time such as evening or weekends to begin driving on the highways for the first time. High traffic times such as early or late afternoon are too congested and dangerous for a novice driver.

  2. Step 2

Drive defensively at all times. This means be aware and alert to all the other drivers on the freeway. Make sure to check the mirrors often to look out for the speeding or reckless driver. Know that other drivers are not always aware of their surroundings so it is up to you to stay out of their way.

  3. Step 3

Understand the rules of the road. They are rules like no speeding, no driving under the influence and no un-signaled lane changes. Be sure to know all of these traffic laws before attempting to drive on the freeways.

  4. Step 4

Pay attention to any adverse weather conditions. It is not a good idea to start driving on the freeways for the first time in inclement weather. However, if it is unavoidable please make the adjustments necessary to drive in given weather conditions. For instance, when it is raining it is much easier for a car to slide on the wet pavement, so slow down and be safe.

  5. Step 5

Merge properly onto the freeway. This is probably the most apprehensive aspect of freeway driving. A driver should accelerate onto the on-ramp and into traffic at the same speed as the other drivers on the highway. Be sure to check the mirrors as you are merging. Do not stop on an on-ramp because other drivers behind you are accelerating as well. Stopping on the on-ramp will often result in rear-end collision or make it very difficult to merge from a complete stop.

  6. Step 6

Change lanes as necessary but be sure to check the mirrors and look for any blind spots that the mirrors do not make viewable. Also, signal well before any lane change to let the other drivers know your intentions.

  7. Step 7

Exit the freeway by locating the most convenient off-ramp. Again, be certain to check the mirrors and blind spots for any other cars. Signal the lane change and steer the car toward the exit.

  8. Step 8

Review the first attempt to drive on the freeway for any errors or issues that arose. This review can help a novice learn from their mistakes.

Tips & Warnings
