Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Test drive several health clubs until one feels right to you. For example, if you hear loud rock music reverberating off the walls, it's likely you haven't found the right place.
Step2
Check out the equipment that you'll use. For instance, machines that operate pneumatically are much easier to use than mechanical ones.
Step3
Interview the trainer you'll be using. Is he trained to meet your needs or just those of the young "hard-bodies"? Is he interested in your medical history? Will he help you design a physical program, and will he continually track your progress?
Step4
Partner with a friend. Making trips to the health club takes discipline, and having someone do it with you is very helpful. Find someone who already goes and try to match her schedule.
Step5
Before you commit to doing serious exercise, tell your doctor your plans. If necessary, ask to have a physical examination, and know fully of your shortcomings before joining a health club. Ask your doctor to provide your information in writing which should become a part of your file maintained by the trainer at the health club.
Step6
Check out the membership cost and what you will be obligated to pay each month. This is important because prices vary, depending on location, equipment and amenities. Make sure the gym you choose will allow you to terminate your membership if you determine you have made a bad decision.
