Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Internet Access
-
Step 1
Look at Others
One of the best ways to learn how to create an online writing profile is to look at the profile of others. It’s not original, but it works.
This is especially helpful if you have no idea what to include or what to say. Not only will it help decide what to include, you will probably get some ideas on what you don’t want to include. -
Step 2
Read
There are many articles on the web addressing this subject. More than looking, do some reading research. When you run across an article on the subject though, consider the source.
For example, is this person in your niche, what does their online writing profile look like, is there site professional? All of these lend credence to their expertise on the subject. -
Step 3
Decide What Works for You
When creating an online writing profile, you need to decide what works for you after all the research has been done.
For example, I read an article from a freelance writer who is a big whig in the industry. I mean, his site gets over three million visitors a month. But, the advice he gave in this area just didn’t sit well with me. So, I ignored it.
Some may call that foolish, but we’re all individuals. And, one of the best things about freelance writing is you get to set the rules. I like my online writing profile, so I didn’t feel it was necessary to change it because an industry expert said something else. -
Step 4
Some “Must Haves”
In spite of the advice in Step 3, I do think there are some must haves every freelance writing profile should have: freelance writing samples and education/experience.
In my experience, these will be the two things clients will use to evaluate your ability for a job. Of the two, writing samples tend to hold the most weight in my experience. While education is important, what clients want is someone who can do the job, on time, and within budget.
These have practically nothing to do with education. -
Step 5
Include a Picture
When you create an online writing profile, include a photo. It should be professionally staged and shot. Most agree that black and white photos work as well as color pictures.
The online world can be so cold. While not a necessity, a photo personalizes your online presence, which could lead to more jobs.
