Things You'll Need:
- hand mirror
-
Step 1
Open your mouth- One of the biggest things you can do to improve your sound is to open your mouth. Many singers just don't take advantage of all that they are doing right because they don't open their mouths far enough. Look in your hand mirror as you are singing. Does your mouth resemble a straight line or an egg? It should look more like an egg. You can also hold your finger up to your mouth. Your mouth should be open as far as the first joint on your index finger.
-
Step 2
Control your tongue - The tongue can be very problematic for a lot of singers. It pulls back in the mouth which makes the sound muffled or it sticks up in the middle of the mouth or somewhere else. Take the tip of your tongue and stick it to the back of your lower front teeth and leave it there (unless you are saying something that requires you to move it like t, l, d or n.
-
Step 3
Use your breath - If you read my article about breath support, then you know breath support is important. Along the same line is using enough breath. Many singers just don't use enough air as they are singing. Especially on high notes. To check you breath, place your hand right next to your mouth. Make sure that you feel a little puff of breath as you start to sing and in between each note. Also think that you are getting louder as you go up to high notes and as you are holding long notes.

on 9/30/2008 2besure - I'm not aware of a name for it, but you should always let you tongue lay flat in the bottom of your mouth so that it is not in the way of the sound and the sound will come forward. I always tell students tip of the tongue to the back of the lower teeth (when it isn't in use) :-)
