Select the type of structure you want in your feather bed. Baffle box beds are made of small boxes, each stuffed with feathers. The feathers stay in position better with this type of bed. Baffle channels are similarly formed except the feathers are stuffed into long channels. The feathers shift more but this also allows you to position them where you want them. Both the baffle box and channels are available with an extra seam, called a gusset, to add extra cushion.

Choose the amount of support you need. Choose either one universal layer for support, which means the down fill is the only layer on the bed, or opt to have layered support with a firmer layer underneath the down.

    • 3

Decide what kind of filling you want. Goose down is usually used for feather beds, but it is often mixed with a goose feathers at different ratios. These ratios will determine the price and comfort of the bed. Duck down is another option that is sometimes combined with goose down.
