How to Buy and Use a Featherbed

Choosing the right feather bed is important since it is an expensive purchase that will last for years. The right feather bed will provide a soft cushion for you to sleep on while still providing you with the support you need. Feather beds are actually thick, feather mattress pads that lay on your usual mattress. They don't take away from the support your mattress gives you, so feel free to get a feather bed with any amount of support that suits you.

Things You'll Need

  • Fitted sheet
  • Mattress protector
  • Select the type of structure you want in your feather bed. Baffle box beds are made of small boxes, each stuffed with feathers. The feathers stay in position better with this type of bed. Baffle channels are similarly formed except the feathers are stuffed into long channels. The feathers shift more but this also allows you to position them where you want them. Both the baffle box and channels are available with an extra seam, called a gusset, to add extra cushion.

  • Choose the amount of support you need. Choose either one universal layer for support, which means the down fill is the only layer on the bed, or opt to have layered support with a firmer layer underneath the down.

  • Decide what kind of filling you want. Goose down is usually used for feather beds, but it is often mixed with a goose feathers at different ratios. These ratios will determine the price and comfort of the bed. Duck down is another option that is sometimes combined with goose down.

  • Narrow down your options by setting a price limit and researching different brands and stores by using both customer reviews and professional reviews.

  • Purchase your feather bed and lay it over your original mattress. Attach it to the bed using the straps on each corner. Cover the feather bed with a mattress pad protector and fitted sheet. It is important to protect the feather bed since they are not easy to launder.

  • Shake your feather bed outside on a weekly basis and leave it in the fresh air if the weather permits. Lay the feather bed back atop your mattress and use your hand to move the feathers back to their desired position.

  • Rejuvenate the feather bed every five years by having it professionally cleaned with ultraviolet rays. If the feather bed is loosing its filling, you can have it restuffed as well.
