Ever wondered if you scribblings are actually deep, insightful, and ready to be published? If you prepare yourself with these few steps first, you will have a better chance of getting your stories or poems published.
Begin by researching magazines, websites, or journals that publish topics or stories similiar to the genre you are working with. For example, if you have a science fiction story, don't try to submit it to a publication printing romance. You'll get a rejection letter right off the bat.

Once you have found the publications you want to submit to, double check your story. Has it been spellchecked? Is it grammatically correct? Is it in the proper format? Many of these questions will help you determine whether the story will be presented to the best of your ability.

Make sure you follow the publication's guidelines. If you don't then they will know you really didn't read their guidelines and you will receive a rejection letter. Most publications ask for a cover letter, so make sure you have written and handy when you are ready to submit.

Check the method that the publication prefers for submissions. Most publications are now accepting submissions online, but some are still only accepting submissions through the mail. Query the editor if you are unsure what they prefer.

Send your article. Once you have sent your article, you just have to wait to hear back from the publication to know whether it was accepted or rejected.

Be patient. The wait time to hear back from a publication can be anywhere from thirty days to six months.
Don't do simultanious submissions if the publication you submit to does not except them.
Do not staple pages together if you are mailing them. Use a paper clip instead.
