How to Build a Fort from Branches

While some people think only kids should build a fort, it's a fun activity for anyone who has the ability to visualize building one. Older people have more experience and ought to be able to build a bigger and better fort than they did as kids.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather a variety of branches to use as you build your fort. Get several long, sturdy branches as well as several smaller branches full of leaves.

    • 2

Survey the area and decide the best location to build a fort. If you have a large tree in your yard, lean the branches against the tree at an angle so you can fit between the branches and a tree. Other ideas include putting branches across a hollow or a hole or building a tepee-type fort.

    • 3

Build a fort by making a tepee with four long branches as tall as or taller than you. Bundle them, tie the ends at one side of the bundle and set the branches so they're vertical with the tied end in the air. Pull the bottom ends out away from each other to create a space under the branches.

    • 4

Use smaller branches full of leaves to fill in the area between the long branches. Twist smaller branches together to create walls or lock the smaller branches in place using knobs on the long branches.

    • 5

Lash the branches together with thick string or twine. If you compress the branches together tight enough, you form a weatherproof fort that protects you.

    • 6

Smooth the ground of the fort and remove any objects that might poke you like twigs or rocks. You can rake leaves or pile pine needles to form soft beds or seats inside your fort.

    • 7

Make a hole for ventilation if you plan to build a fire inside your fort. Use caution to ensure you don't burn your fort down.
