How to Use a DBA (Doing Business As)
A person or business would use a DBA, or "doing business as" name for a number of reasons. A business or individual could also use a number of separate DBAs. Here is how to set up each DBA in a proper manner so that it will be legal.

1
Determine a DBA name for your business. Since most DBA registry is on a county-by-county basis, check your local business registries to make sure your DBA name isn't already in use. If it is in use but your business is entirely different from the company using it, you may still be able to use that DBA name.

2
Use a DBA if you are a sole proprietor trying to get your business started. A DBA enables you to brand the name of your business rather than your personal name. You can get bank accounts in the DBA business's name as well as utilities, such as telephone contracts.

3
Control costs of running multiple businesses with a DBA. You can set up one corporation or legal entity and from that do multiple DBAs. For example, you can set up a movie theater corporation for the numerous movie theaters you own and from that set up a DBA for each movie theater. It would cost a lot more to set up each movie theater as its own corporation.

4
File the appropriate paperwork before you begin using your new business name. Some states require that you file DBA paperwork with the Secretary of State. Other states require that you file your paperwork in the county clerk's office.

5
Pay the fees for the DBA paperwork. Realize this is a limited license and that it is your responsibility to renew it in a timely manner.
