When replacing a blown head gasket, there are many steps along the way to access this part. Removing the valve cover is one of the those steps you must complete. It is a fairly simple process as long as you have a little knowledge, patience and the right tools.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate all of the valve cover bolts before you start removing them. This should include looking for hidden bolts. If you have an emblem or anything on the top of the valve cover, pop this off and check to see if there is another bolt underneath it.

  2. Step 2

Use a speed wrench to start removing the bolts. There is no particular order you need to remove them in, but they may be different lengths and will need to be returned to the correct hole upon reinstallation. Mark the bolts with numbers on tape or something to help you remember where they go.

  3. Step 3

Set the bolts near you somewhere secure, like on a tool caddy or work bench. This will keep you from losing any of them. They can be replaced, but you would need the exact size of the one you lost which could be hard to determine once you lose it.

  4. Step 4

Jiggle the valve cover to make sure it is loose and not sticking anywhere. If it is sticking, you can pry the sides up very carefully with a pry bar or screwdriver. It is best to try and get the valve cover gasket off on the valve cover in one piece, as this will make for easier removal.
