Chess requires knowledge of strategy. In order to win at chess, you must remember only one thing--do not allow your opponent to take your king. If he captures your king, the game is over. Castle your king and increase your chances of winning at chess.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chess set
  1. Step 1

Defend your king to win at chess with a defense strategy. Castle your king. Protect him from capture so you do not lose the game.

  2. Step 2

Move your pieces out except for your king and rook. These must remain unmoved and in their original positions. You must move the bishop and the knight on the king side of the board.

  3. Step 3

Look at the chessboard. See that there are only empty spaces between your king and your rook. You may only use the castle strategy if all the spaces are empty.

  4. Step 4

Castle the king. Move the king down to second space from the end. Move the rook to the other side of the king in the next space.

  5. Step 5

Continue playing chess. Do not move your king, if possible. If you must use your rook to defend, move it back as soon as possible to continue defense.

  6. Step 6

Check your opponent's king. Continue to check his king until this results in checkmate. You have won this game. Play chess again and continue to learn new ways to win.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not move any of the pawns in front of the rook, knight or bishop positions. The whole point of the castle is to protect the king. Keep those pawns in place for best defense.
