How to Attach a Newly Framed Wall to Concrete

Add walls in your garage to separate storage areas from parking areas or partition a workshop area. After building a newly framed wall, it's time to attach it to the concrete floor. You can hire a pro or do this yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the area. Sweep or vacuum all wood shavings and dirt from the area where the wall will be installed onto the concrete. Make sure there are no nails or screws on the concrete floor; they can get stuck under the framed wall. Remove any raised areas or fill in any low spots; the concrete floor must be level where the wall is installed. Make sure you mark the wall position on the concrete floor.

  2. Step 2

Apply a heavy-duty construction adhesive to the bottom (sole) plate of the newly framed wall or to the concrete floor. Follow the manufacturer's directions for installing wood onto concrete. Some construction adhesives are applied to only one surface. Then the wall is raised and put into place immediately. Another type of heavy-duty adhesive requires both surfaces to be covered with the adhesive and a set-up time.

  3. Step 3

Raise the wall into place directly on the chalk marks so the wall is level and plumb. You'll probably need a helper for this. If you are working alone, place a heavy object close enough for the wall to lean on it. This will help you to get the wall into position. If the adhesive you've used is the type applied to both the floor and the wall plate, you'll need help to position the wall.

  4. Step 4

Use a ram set to install concrete nails into the wood wall through to the concrete. A ram set basically shoots a bullet nail into the concrete. You can also use concrete nails with a concrete drill bit. Many homeowners choose an adhesive that doesn't require any nails because the job is much easier.
