Dating back as far as the times of Buddha, Thai massage is an ancient form of body work that relieves pain in sore, tight muscles, relaxes the body and balances energy. Also called Thai yoga, Thai massage utilizes a variety of massage and stretching techniques to create a unique form of body work. With a few simple tricks, you can add a back stretch to your Thai massage repertoire.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large, soft exercise mat
  • Small cushion (optional)
  1. Step 1

Practice Thai massage in the traditional style on a soft mat on the floor. This form of body work includes many stretches which cannot be performed on a traditional table. Make sure that your mat is large enough that you can move around your client's body easily without leaving the mat.

  2. Step 2

Begin the back stretch with your client face up. Squat or sit on a small cushion at the base of your client's feet. Place one hand under each of your client's ankles, and carefully lift yourself up to standing position, lifting their legs with you.

  3. Step 3

Bring their feet together and walk in towards their buttocks so that their feet point straight up towards the ceiling. Ask your client to open their arms so that they are perpendicular to their body and then open their legs just a bit further than shoulder width.

  4. Step 4

Bend your knees so that they bump into their knees, gently nudging their legs open and bending the knees. Step your feet between their legs and place the tops of your feet just below their underarms.

  5. Step 5

Pull gently on their feet, bringing them around the front of your legs so that the soles of your client's feet touch just above your knees. Push down against the feet gently, pushing them down towards the face and then rounding them back up to your knees to make a circle.

  6. Step 6

Complete at least three circles before completing the Thai massage back stretch. Release the feet, step back through the legs and release your client's feet gently to the floor.
