As you start learning about martial arts, you'll find that there are many different disciplines. One of the more advanced studies is capoeira. Capoeira began as a way for Brazilian slaves to amuse themselves and has now developed into a modern blend of game, dance and martial arts. You may want to learn more about capoeira before you decide to study it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the basic elements of a capoeira game. In a traditional capoeira match, players stand in a circle. Each player then makes his way to the circle to dance and spar. Strikes are made in the air without physically hitting another player.

  2. Step 2

Understand some of the common terms used in capoeira. In capoeira, a circle is referred to as a roda and a game is a jogo. Additionally, chamada means calling a player to the circle to participate in the game.

  3. Step 3

Find a martial arts studio that teaches capoeira. Once you know a little bit about capoeira, you can locate a studio to learn more. Request to sit in on a class before joining.

  4. Step 4

Watch experts train and spar. During your introductory class, you can view different players of the game practice their moves. Note the high athleticism of the participants since acrobatic moves are often included in capoeira.

  5. Step 5

Study the different techniques used in capoeira. As a player of the game, you need to study and master the defenses, attacks and combinations used during a match. You'll also notice that music is always present during game play.

Tips & Warnings
  • One of the central movements in capoeira is ginga. You'll learn that the ginga is the way that you move back and forth in the game.
  • Besides the sparring part of capoeira, each participant takes turns singing and playing different instruments within a circle.
