How to Tip for Pizza Delivery

Like hairdressers, concierge clerks or restaurant waiters, pizza delivery drivers perform a valuable service. Next time someone brings a hot pizza to your door, remember that he is responsible for paying for his own gas and vehicle maintenance. Take some time to learn the tipping etiquette that will make you a savvy (and generous) pizza lover.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Tip a standard amount of 15 percent for a good delivery experience, 20 percent for excellent service, 10 percent if the service is mediocre, and nothing if your pizza delivery person is rude or seriously late. If you have an extra small order, tip a minimum of $2 to $3 anyway.
Step2
Be more liberal with your tip if the weather is extreme. Pizza delivery can be a risky job during rain, snow and sleet, and it's a true insult if you decide not to tip a driver who had to brave some serious elements to deliver your hot pie.
Step3
Use whatever form of payment you prefer when tipping the driver. Many people simply add the tip to their credit card receipt or their check total as they would in a restaurant, but cash, of course, works for a tip, too. Many delivery drivers prefer credit card tips because customers tend to be more generous with their plastic than their cash.
Step4
Give a larger tip if you live further from the store, or near construction or traffic congestion. Remember that driving through residential areas takes more time, so an extra mile or two may mean 15 to 20 minutes of extra driving or delayed deliveries for other customers.
Step5
Use an online tip calculator if you are among the mathematically challenged (see Resources below).
Step6
Don't stiff the pizza delivery driver if she was efficient, especially if you're a regular. Tipping motivates the driver, and generous tippers reap the benefits of fast future deliveries.
Step7
Don't replace monetary tips with verbal ones. While it is always considerate to let service providers know when they have exceeded your expectations, giving only a verbal tip is considered stingy. If you're happy with the service, ante up with a monetary tip.
