Among the Internet services available on the iPhone is the ability to send and receive email. If you already use Gmail for your email needs or would like to sign up for a new account, you can easily use your account on both the iPhone and your computer. There are a few necessary steps to complete in order to set up your account.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Create a Gmail account, if you do not already have one, on the Gmail website (see Resources below). You will be asked to enter your first and last name, a login name and password of your choice and a security question so that Gmail can ask you to verify your identity if you ever forget your password. Read the "Terms of Service" thoroughly and, if you agree, click on "I accept. Create my account," at which point your account will be ready to use.
Step2
Log into your Gmail account using your login name and password. Click on "Settings" in the main menu and then click on "Forwarding and POP/IMAP." You will need to enable IMAP, or The Internet Message Access Protocol, in order to set up access to your Gmail account on the iPhone.
Step3
Scroll down to the "IMAP Access" settings and click on button next to the "Enable IMAP" option. Press "Save Changes" and log out of your Gmail account.
Step4
Configure your IMAP settings on your iPhone. Turn on your iPhone and tap "Settings" on the home screen and then tap "Mail." Tap "Add Account" and then "Other."
Step5
Check to make sure that the "IMAP" menu is highlighted. Type "imap.gmail.com" into the field labeled "Host Name" and enter your full Gmail address ending in "@gmail.com" into the "User Name" field. You will also be asked to enter your password so that you will not need to type it in every time you want to check your Gmail on your iPhone.
Step6
Review the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" menu listed below your Gmail login information on the iPhone screen. The "Host Name" should be listed as "smtp.gmail.com" and your username and password should be the same as above. Tap "Save" when you are finished to store these settings.
Step7
Confirm that you have entered the correct settings by tapping on "Settings" on the home screen of your iPhone and then tapping on the name of your Gmail account, followed by "Advanced." If your account is properly configured, both "Incoming Settings" and "Outgoing Settings" should be set to "ON," and the server ports should be 993 and 587, respectively.

Tips & Warnings

  • Gmail messages that you delete using the iPhone will be moved to the "Trash" folder in Gmail and will automatically be permanently deleted within 30 days if you do not move them elsewhere. You will not be able to retrieve these messages after they have been deleted.
