Changing an air filter on a dirt bike is very important to maintain a healthy engine. The purpose of an air filter is to keep unwanted particles from entering the engine that will cause damage to the engine's moving parts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New air filter
  • Air filter oil
  • Water-proof grease

    Removing the Old Air Filter

  1. Step 1

Locate the air filter cover on the dirt bike. It is located under the seat or under the side panel.

  2. Step 2

Remove the cover to the air filter with the correct socket or wrench and remove the old air filter.

  3. Step 3

Separate the plastic cage from air filter, being careful not to break the cage or tear the air filter.

  4. Step 4

Wipe the air box clean of debris and grease with a clean rag.

  5. Installing the New Air Filter

  6. Step 1

Apply new air filter oil to the new filter, by pouring it on and then gently kneading it through the filter with your fingers. Continue to do this until every spot of the filter is covered with oil; this will keep small particles of dirt from passing through the filter.

  7. Step 2

Place small amounts of water-proof grease around the outside of the filter prior to installation. This allows the filter to seal properly to the air box while in use and will keep air and dirt from entering the engine from the sides of the filter.

  8. Step 3

Slide new filter into the housing and tighten the nut to hold the air filter in place. Press the edge of the filter that has the grease applied to the plastic housing.

  9. Step 4

Install the air filter cover and tighten bolts to secure to bike.

Tips & Warnings
  • With a small nail, punch a few holes in the foil seal of the new air filter oil container. This will allow small amounts of oil to flow onto the air filter and allow even distribution of the oil onto the new air filter.
  • Wait until engine is cool before changing air filter.
