Things You'll Need:
- Socket wrench
- Socket extension
- Spark plug socket
-
Step 1
Purchase the required number of properly-gapped spark plugs for your vehicle. Start this job with a cool engine. Locate the spark plugs on your car. You can follow the thick, rubber-covered wires to locate all spark plugs.
-
Step 2
Replace only one spark plug at a time. You can have serious problems if you fail to follow this step.
-
Step 3
Grasp the wire at the top of the first spark plug. Be sure to pull as close to the engine as possible so you don't ruin the spark plug wire. Pull the end of the wire off the spark plug. You might have to wiggle it some to get it to come loose.
-
Step 4
Assemble the socket wrench, extension and spark plug socket. The socket should have a rubber washer in it to help grasp the spark plug.
-
Step 5
Slide the socket over the first spark plug and loosen it to remove it from the car. Examine the plug. You should see some signs of wear but there shouldn't be any cracks. If there are, you may have other problems that need attention.
-
Step 6
Set the new spark plug in the socket only. Start threading it into place by hand. Finish with the wrench. Get the plug snug but not overtight. Put the plug wire back onto the plug.
-
Step 7
Repeat Steps 3 through 6 until you have put all new plugs in the car. Start your engine and you should be good to go.
