The layback technique is a wonderful tool to have in your rock climbing skill set. While it is physically demanding, it's great way to get you through a tough spot on the rock. This is a technique that should be practiced by all rock climbers.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate staggered hand holds. When you use the layback technique, these will most often be cracks.

  2. Step 2

Place your feet on the rock in opposing positions. Your left leg and right arm should be similarly placed, as should your right leg and left arm.

  3. Step 3

Lay back into the position, using your feet and hands to keep you on the rock. Keep your feet in front of your body, approximately knee-high or higher, and your arms approximately shoulder high. Move your buttocks as far from the rock as you can manage.

  4. Step 4

Climb using small, short movements. If you reach too high, your feet will slide off of the rock. This is a physically demanding move and is typically used only to get you over a difficult transition or to help you corner on the rock.

  5. Step 5

Practice this rock climbing technique on short climbs until you're comfortable with your ability to hold your weight with your arms and legs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear protective gear when rock climbing. Accidents happen to the best climbers and your protective gear will help you avoid serious injury.
