Whether you plan on shooting it or not, holding a handgun with a proper grip is a critical part of safe and effective gun handling. A solid, well formed grip on a handgun allows you to keep the gun under your control, improve your shooting and maintain the highest possible level of safety. Follow these steps to properly grip a handgun.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick the gun up. When you first pick the gun up wrap three fingers from the middle finger to the pinkie finger around the magazine well. Wrap your thumb around the other side. Importantly, keep your forefinger straight along the side of the barrel and not near the trigger.

  2. Step 2

Line it up. Make adjustments so that the sights of the gun make a straight line that extends over your wrist and the bone of your forearm when you hold your arm straight out or down. As you adjust the gun in your grip to fit this configuration make sure that you still have trigger reach with your forefinger.

  3. Step 3

Slide upwards. Put your free hand on top of the barrel so that you can edge your grip hand upward on the magazine well, so you hold the gun as close as possible to the bore-line. This enables you to have maximum firing control and minimizes kickback when shooting.

  4. Step 4

Wrap your second hand under your grip hand. To further stabilize the gun in your grip and during shooting, take your free hand and cup it underneath your grip hand. The side of your grip hand should rest in the palm of your second hand and the fingers of your second hand should wrap around to hold the top of your grip hand.

  5. Step 5

Align your thumbs together. You can curl both the thumb of your grip hand and the thumb of your support hand downward to enhance control over the handgun. Alternately, you can extend both thumbs outward toward the target. Either way, make sure your thumbs are in the same position relative to the gun.
