How to Choose a Haircut for a Round Face

If your face is wide as it is long, you have a round face and need to choose a haircut to complement it. Contrary to what some think, this is not a "fat" face and has nothing to do with weight. Women with round faces need to select a haircut that will make her face look thinner and longer. Actress Drew Barrymore has a classic round face.

  • Determine if your face is indeed a round shape by looking at yourself in the mirror and drawing an outline of your face with lipstick. Step back and check out the shape.

  • Choose either a long or short haircut, depending on your preference. Longer hair is a good choice because it adds length under your chin. A haircut that is chin length will make your face look even rounder.

  • Add height to your haircut with layers that give lift at the crown. Backcombing your roots can also give some lift. For more height, use a mousse or spray that adds volume.

  • Put long hair up on top of your head, but let some loose tendrils dangle by your face. A high ponytail with softly flowing ringlets can be a good choice for the round face.

  • Curl or spike your short haircut. This will decrease the round face while giving the illusion of a longer face.

  • Highlight hair around your face to slenderize the round shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Women with round faces should avoid straight hair. A shag or layered cut will give length to your face.
  • If you have bangs, style them thin, layered and wispy. Heavy, straight bangs make your face look shorter and rounder.
