How to Break WEP Encryption

Breaking encryption on any network takes some practice and skill. Most wireless networks use Wired Equivalent Privacy, or WEP encryption, for protection. Anyone that sets up a wireless network should test the security of encryption coding system. Trying to break the WEP encryption is an excellent way to test wireless system security.

    Instructions

      • 1

Install an operating system compatible packet sniffing software on the wireless computer. There are many packet sniffing software options available. The most appropriate software will depend on the size of the network, and the security measures in place.

      • 2

Establish a test wireless access point to experiment with the packet sniffing software. Any access will suffice but a person should install one that is very similar to the one used on the network.

      • 3

Assign an Internet protocol address to the test access point. The IP address can come from any available pool.

      • 4

Access the access point's utilities through the Internet after assigning the Internet protocol address. Simply open up a web browser and type the IP address into the web address bar. Next, click on the "Security" tab to access the WEP key encryption module. Assign the WEP key pass code and click "Save." Finally, close the web browser.

      • 5

Connect the test computer to the wireless access point. Open the new wireless network maintenance application on the computer. The new network will appear on the application. Connect to that wireless network and enter the WEP key pass code.

      • 6

Open the packet sniffing software and allow it scan the test network. This can take up to an hour. While the software is running, maintain activity on the test wireless network. The packet, if working properly, will eventually sniff out the WEP key pass code.
