How to Connect to a Wireless Network Using the iPod Touch

The iPod touch is not only a music player, but also your gateway to the world via the Internet. In order to connect to the iTunes music store and use the email and web-browsing features of your iPod touch, you must first connect to a wireless network.

Instructions

1. Touch the "Settings" icon on the home screen of the iPod touch. The iPod does not require you to press down very hard to select an icon. Using your finger, lightly tap the application you want to activate it.

2. Choose the Wi-Fi setting and turn it on. You may need to wait a moment while the device locates available networks.

3. Select the wireless network you want to connect to. You may have more than one option based on your location. If you are prompted for a password, enter it and touch "Join."

4. Opt to have your iPod alert you when there is a new network you can join. This can be useful if you are no longer in range of a network you have previously used. To receive these messages, turn on the "Ask to Join Networks" feature.

5. Tell the iPod touch to "forget" a wireless network that you no longer want to use, so it will not automatically try to connect you. Under the Wi-Fi settings, tap the ">" button next to the network you want to delete and then touch "Forget this network."

6. Expect that some wireless networks detected by your iPod touch will ask you to sign up for a fee-based service. If this is acceptable to you, open up the Safari application from the home screen. You will be taken to a website that explains the terms of service and accepts credit card payments for wireless Internet access.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't despair if you do not have a wireless network connection in your home. Public libraries often have wireless Internet access and do not charge their patrons for using it. Local cafes, coffeehouses and bookstores may also provide hotspots to their customers, but you may have to pay a fee for the service.

• Fully charge the battery of your iPod touch before you go in search of a wireless network. Using the USB cable that came with your iPod, hook your iPod up to your computer. Make sure your computer does not go into "sleep" mode or the battery may actually drain instead of charge.
