-
Step 1
Create your resume to submit online in a word processing program.
-
Step 2
Type your name, address, phone number and email address at the top of your resume.
-
Step 3
Create an "Objective" that states the specific type of job you are seeking.
-
Step 4
Decide whether to create a traditional chronological or a functional/skills resume. The first often works best for those who have a great deal of work experience and notable accomplishments in these positions. The latter works best for recent graduates or those having little work experience in the field they are pursuing, as they can focus on their skills rather than their work experience.
-
Step 5
Create a chronological resume by using an "Experience" heading under which you list your work experience, beginning with the most recent. Either put the employer or the position held first, depending on which is most impressive, and include the dates you were employed there. List accomplishments and work duties under each of the jobs. You can also create a "Skills" section in your resume to highlight overall crucial skills that you have.
-
Step 6
Build a functional resume by creating an extended "Skills" section highlighting the skills and accomplishments obtained from jobs and your life experience. It is often wise to include a "Work History" as well, with just the employer, position held and dates of employment, as many employers will expect to see it.
-
Step 7
Create an "Education" section, which will include degrees, institutions they were received from and any relevant information such as honors and related coursework.
-
Step 8
Write the resume using active action verbs and field keywords. Often resumes submitted online will be searched for relevant keywords. For example, this includes such verbs as managed, designed and created, as well as skill key words. If the job you are applying for requires someone who is detail-oriented or has leadership abilities, don't forget to mention these skills and the context in which you have acquired them.
-
Step 9
Submit your resume in the simplest format possible. Do not use fancy fonts or bullets, which can cause problems when an employer attempts to open the document. Focus on making the resume readable, not a work of art.
-
Step 10
Save in .txt format. This format can be opened in any word processing program that a potential employer might be using.
