How to Dress for a Heat Wave

During the summer months and in locations where hot weather is the norm, heat waves are inevitable. In these times, we all want to find a way to get cool. One of the best ways is to dress appropriately for the weather.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and silk that let air move through them. You'll find both casual and dressier pieces in all of these fabrics for your various clothing needs.

  2. Step 2

Choose loose, flowing garments that permit heat to escape, thus keeping the body cool.

  3. Step 3

Layer a jacket or sweater over a shirt or a dress for use in air-conditioned offices or other locations. It can then be easily removed when you get out into the heat.

  4. Step 4

Go for clothes in light colors. Light-colored clothing reflects the sun, which keeps heat away from the body, while dark colors absorb the heat and make you feel even hotter.

  5. Step 5

Look for lightweight summer suits if you must wear business wear to work. These suits offer a professional look with fabrics that are cool enough for the summer months.

  6. Step 6

Take care of your feet as well during the hot days of summer. Don't wear shoes that fit too snugly or socks that don't breathe.

  7. Step 7

Protect your skin during a heat wave and get some well-needed shade by wearing hats with brims wide enough to provide some protection. Some hats even have UV protection built into the fabric.

Tips & Warnings
  • Long-sleeve, lightweight clothes are a good choice if you plan to be out during the hottest portion of the day, which is usually between 11 am and 2 pm. These will protect your skin from the powerful UV rays of the sun, while at the same time keep you cool.
  • Remember to protect your vision by wearing sunglasses that have 100 percent UV protection. If you don't have the full protection, you can actually damage your eyes more than if you didn't wear sunglasses at all.
  • Even though you should dress appropriately for a heat wave, one of the most important things to remember is to make sure to wear sunscreen at all times during the day to protect yourself from the sun.
