The 2002 Buick Century has a very useful computer system that will warn you about various problems, when they occur. One of the regular maintenance requirements it monitors is the engine oil and oil filter. If your “Change Oil Soon” light stays on after you start the car, it is time to service the oil and oil filter. You should do this as soon as possible, after you see the light. It does not matter if you do it yourself, or have a professional do it; just be sure it is done. This is the most significant part of the process, but if you do not reset the “Change Oil Soon” light; it will not function properly. When it is not reset, it is not capable of monitoring your oil system. Read on to learn how to reset the “Change Oil Soon” light on your 2002 Buick Century.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2002 Buick Century
  • Oil and oil filter properly replaced
  1. Step 1

Turn the key to the “Run” position when the car is not on.

  2. Step 2

Slowly press completely down on the gas pedal and then release it. Repeat this three times within a period of five seconds.

  3. Step 3

If the “Change Oil Soon” light blinks, the oil monitoring system is in the process of being reset.

  4. Step 4

Turn the vehicle key to the “Off” position.

  5. Step 5

Start the car. The “Change Oil Soon” light should come on for a few seconds (as all the monitoring lights do), but then go off. If this is the case, you have completed resetting the “Change Oil Soon” light. If the light stays on after a few moments of the car running, the system has not been reset. You must again follow the steps to reset your “Change Oil Soon” light.

Tips & Warnings
  • The “Change Oil Soon” light comes on once the monitoring system has tracked the engine temperature and a certain amount of engine revolutions, not the actual mileage. The system figures the life expectancy of the oil according to the individual driving conditions. This amount will vary a lot from vehicle to vehicle.
  • It is very important to always reset the “Change Oil Soon” light, after the oil and oil filter have been replaced. You should not reset it, if this requirement has not been completed. The system will not work properly, if you do.
