In the 1940s William Herbert Sheldon Ph.D., MD, an American psychologist and numismatist (scientific study of currency in its many forms), created the body type classifications. These classifications are known as somatotype. A body type is often called “body shape” and the three groups are endomorphic, mesomorphic and ectomorphic. Do you know your body type? Once you know your body type, you can decide on what approach you need to use in weight control and training (or exercise). You also must be aware that you will not be able to change your genetics or bone structure. The best advice is to work with what you have and to not set unreachable goals for yourself. Read on to learn how to find your body type.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mirror (full-length, if possible)
  • Honesty
  1. Step 1

Stand in front of the mirror with a complete overall view of yourself.

  2. Step 2

Read the following descriptions of the three body types and look at yourself for similar traits.

  3. Step 3

Know that endomorphic is a body shape that is often called an “apple" or "pear." The apples in this group will have more weight on the top portion of the torso, and the pears have more on the lower portion. This type of body has higher fat storage, big bone structure, less muscle and a broad waist. It is also common for the legs to be short in this body type. Weigh gain is ordinary for this body type.

  4. Step 4

Understand that mesomorphic is often called “hourglass” for women and “rectangle” for men. This body type has big bone structure, low fat storage and a solid torso. It is also common for the waist to be slender and the shoulders broad in this body type. This type of body is considered athletic and can usually gain or lose weight easily.

  5. Step 5

Be aware that ectomorphic is a body shape that is often called “banana." This body type has lengthy arms and legs, short top torso, slender shoulders, low fat storage and long thin muscles. This body type will usually have trouble gaining weight.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is very common for an individual to fall into two (and sometimes all three) groups of body types. If this is the case for you, consider all body types when attempting any changes in diet and exercise.
  • Take the body type test found under the Resources section for additional help on determining your body type. You will also find further details and suggestions for every body type.
  • Always consult with your doctor first for more information concerning any changes in diet and exercise.
