Step 1
Research the health benefits of coconut oil through online sites and books. You'll learn about the properties of coconut oil, its traditional uses, and a historical perspective. See Resources, below, for excellent sources.
-
Step 2
Purchase organic extra virgin coconut oil for use as a raw supplement. It's important not to buy coconut oil without the "organic extra virgin" classification for health supplement use because it will not be as beneficial due to the processing. Organic extra virgin coconut oil is the most pure and best for you. Expeller-pressed coconut oil is great for cooking and baking.
-
Step 3
Use coconut oil in place of margarine (which is not good for your heart the way coconut oil certainly is), vegetable shortening and vegetable oil. You can use coconut oil as a spread, like butter, too.
-
Step 4
Add coconut oil to smoothies. Make a simple, nutritious beverage by blending 8 ounces yogurt, 4 ounces fruit, 1/4 cup milk and 2 TB coconut oil. Add a fresh raw egg if desired.
-
Step 5
Using a mini scoop, portion out a tablespoon or two a day of extra virgin coconut oil to take as a supplement to your diet. After you get used to taking it, you may even look forward to this part of your nutrition regime. This is the simplest way, if you're wondering how to eat coconut oil.

on 5/21/2008 Yes, for cooking use expeller pressed coconut oil. Save the extra virgin centrifuged coconut oil for eating raw and in shakes, as butter, etc.

on 5/21/2008 It's also best to use it for cooking due to it's high smoke point.
