Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- A Basic hand tool set.
- A power hand drill
- SHARP drill bits
- A helping hand
Step1
The first step in removing the door handle on a 1926/1927 Ford Model T closed car, is removing the inside handle. It is held on with a set screw.
Unscrew all 3-4 screws on the latch assembly. Don't forget any screws on the end. Stubborn screws can be "Helped" by Heating them, soaking in penetrating oil, grinding a "Slot" in the screw or using an abrasive like grinding compound for "Grip".
Step2
The second step involves removing the actual Outside door handle. It is Typically held on by two rivets or screws. Either way, it might be easier to DRILL them out.
Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the head of the screw or rivet. Use an oil lubricant while drilling at a medium speed. Feed and speed (pressure and rpms). Try not to rev the drill too fast or push too hard. You could damage or break the bit resulting in injury!
Step3
The handle should now pull out.
If the assemblies are to be reused, they should be soaked or disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt.
The Handle should reassemble similarly. Most of these items are available in reproduction, but are valuable as originals. Don't forget, if you plan to discard the parts and weld the doors shut, try selling them at an online auction to recoup some CASH!
Step4
These steps apply to MOST 1926 and 1927 Ford CLOSED cars. They also apply to the 1928 and 1929 Ford closed cab pick-up truck.
As with any car restoration, maintenance and repair use caution. Heavy gloves help reduce the chance of rusty metal cuts, safety goggles protect your eyes and hearing protection isn't a bad idea.
Good Luck!
